Pass the Test to Become a Licensed Dental Assistant in Nebraska

Complete the requirements to become a licensed dental assistant in Nebraska. The process involves only three steps.

Take the DA Jurisprudence Exam

This exam will evaluate your understanding of Nebraska dental laws.

Submit All the Items Listed in the Application Form

Ensure all required documents listed in the form are sent on time, along with the fee.

Application for Expanded Scope Function Permit/s for the LDA

  • Dental Impressions for Fixed Prosthodontics
  • Dental Impressions and Minor Adjustments for Removable Prostheses
  • Cement Prefabricated Fixed Prostheses on Primary Teeth
  • Monitoring and Administration of Nitrous Oxide

LB 18 for Nebraska Dental Assistants

Legislative Bill 18, or LB 18, enacted into law on March 29, 2017, with an effective date of January 1, 2018, established a system for the licensure of dental assistants. It also gave expanded job functions for dental assistants and dental hygienists. LB 18 likewise provided more powers and duties to various regulatory bodies, such as the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services and the Board of Dentistry, to establish regulations, examinations, and continuing education requirements for the new licenses. Please also refer to the Dentistry Practice Act.

Unlicensed Dental Assistants: Job Descriptions

  • Perform x-rays and coronal polishing remain the same
  • May apply topical local anesthesia under the indirect supervision of a licensed dentist
  • May monitor nitrous oxide analgesia if board-approved, CPR certified, and when under indirect supervision of a licensed dentist
  • May perform duties delegated by a licensed dentist for the purpose of assisting the licensed dentist in clinical and clinical-related duties as allowed in regulations and rules adopted under the Dentistry Practice Act

Licensed Dental Assistants: General Job Requirements

Job

Perform all duties authorized for an unlicensed dental assistant.

Qualifications

  • Graduated from a CODA-accredited program) or with experience (1,500 dental assisting work hours within the past five years)
  • Completed application form and proof of payment for application fee
  • Age (19 years old or older)
  • Citizenship/Lawful presence
  • Graduated from high school (or equivalent, see https://www.education.ne.gov/aded/)
  • Results of CDA sent directly from DANB to the Licensure Unit
  • Passing score on the Nebraska Jurisprudence Exam for Dental Assistants

Licensed Dental Assistants: Permits

  • Available to licensed dental assistants
  • Four additional education and competency permits that include taking dental impressions for fixed prostheses, taking dental impressions and making minor adjustments for removable prostheses, cementing prefabricated fixed prostheses on primary teeth, and monitoring and administering nitrous oxide analgesia.

Licensed Dental Assistants: Expanded Function Permit

  • Available to licensed dental assistants
  • Must have 1,500 hours of experience as a licensed dental assistant to apply
  • Involves level one, which is a simple restoration (one surface) and level two, which is complex restoration (multiple surfaces)
